Activist Alessandra Orofino's cultural city keynote explores how citizens of urban communities are embodying a dangerous 'checked out' mentality when it comes to how their cities are run. Orofino urges audiences to become more active in the political decisions made in their community.
By nature humans are social beings that crave face-to-face interaction. In order to foster a community of communication citizens need to actively participate in their government, ie. by voting, and in larger urban decisions. If we want to foster a city that is rewarding, social and functional, citizens need to speak up and fight for community spaces like parks, buses, schools and community activities. Orofino says, "it is up to us to decide whether we want schools or parking lots, recycling projects or construction sites, cars or buses, loneliness or solidarity."
