Challenges of Public Policy

In this speech, author of 'Naked Economics' Charles Wheelan discusses public policy and the challenges of 'doing the right thing.' Charles Wheelan begins his speech by offering various reasons as to why it's so difficult for politicians to come up with public policies that match business policies. He argues that pragmatic solutions aren't always as readily available in public policy as they are in the marketplace or business settings because the former must serve a communal purpose for a diverse group of individuals. Charles Wheelan insists that shared outcomes leave little room to agree to disagree; everyone has to be on the same page.

In public policy, individuals cannot have the liberty of picking their own course of action because of the significance of a communal outcome.
