American poet Billy Collins discusses the nature of the writing process in this fascinating talk in which he presents several of his poems as delightful animated films that were created in collaboration with the Sundance Channel. Billy Collins also served as United States Poet Laureate from 2001 to 2003.
Although Billy Collins says he was initially resistant to the idea of combining his poems with any other medium, he felt compelled by the notion of bringing poetry to television and "off the shelves." Billy Collins refers to the "anti-poetry shields" we learn in high school, and says people don't have a chance to employ them if they are surprised by a poem on a billboard or in an advertisement.
