The Anthony Atala Keynote Discusses the Technology of Organ Printing
Andrew Robertson — April 21, 2012 — Keynote Trends
Fascinating and shocking, this Anthony Atala keynote reveals the medical technology behind creating biological organs. Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Anthony Atala and his team are working on growing and regenerating biological tissue by combining advance medical science with Desktop printer technology.
While it might sound absurd, the ability to print human organs is under development as a result of the public health crisis regarding the shortage of organs. Using a scanner, a computer detects the damaged tissue and sends that information to a printer. Some models will be able to repair the damaged tissue directly on the patient while other models are designed to print a three-dimensional, functioning organ that will then be transplanted into a patient’s body.
Like something from a science fiction film, developments in medical science continue to push boundaries.
